The Duties of Parents is a book written by J.C. Ryle which provides excellent advice for Christian parents hoping to bring their children closer to God. Many people consider this to be one of the best parenting books they've read. J.C. Ryle was the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool and a strong supporter of the evangelical school. Ryle was also a pastor but he is best known for writing many popular Christian books. Ryle's book Holiness is considered a classic among Christians of all denominations.

I think "The Duties of Parents" only comes in at about 40 pages or so, but this little book is better than some much longer parenting books I have read. Ryle makes good use of his short presentation in making parents aware of what they should be doing to ensure that their children are raised in a godly way.

The entire premise of the book centers around Proverbs 23:6, which says "Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Some of the duties that Ryle states parents have is to train children in the way that they need to go, not in the way they want to, to train children with all love and affection, to train them by our actions and not just our words, to train them by considering their soul first, to train them to a knowledge of the Bible and how to pray, and more.

You can feel the weight of Ryle's passion as you read his words, and I found myself stopping several times throughout to pray for God's grace to enable me to put his words into action.

You won't regret purchasing this book, and you will be glad that it is short, as you will probably want to reread it often as a refresher on how God would have us raise our children. The book doesn't take long to read, so it is perfect for frequent review.

If you're not new to the bible and already understand the basics of Christian living, this book may not do much for you. There are a number of good pearls that made it worth the purchase but overall, I didn't get much in the way of concrete recommendations on how to manage behavioral problems. It's more of a general overview of how to be a Christian parent.
Very good book for new or seasoned parents. It really helped me better understand my responsibilities as a parent to my child.
Convicting! Wow, what an awesome read. Short book and to the point! Every parent should read this since all the responsibility is on our shoulders! We have to make sure we get things right so that our children can follow by our example. BEST BOOK ever on the topic.
A concise theology of the duties of parents, this is taken out of a larger work. The brevity of this tract is unusual for Ryle, but the thoroughness of treatment and no-excuses approach we have come to expect from him is intact.
Although a few of his wording s are dated (written in 1888), most of his observations of the human heart are quite relevant today. Especially in loving our children, leading by example, and idleness (read obsessive use of smartphones movies tv etc instead of working and spending time with and training our children).
Short and simple, yet full of the wisdom both of the fear of God, and the experience of living. Ryle is as rich a teacher as you can find, and his was of making a simple point on hard matters is rare indeed. Anywhere you poke this little book, the Bible bleeds out. Make no mistake, however. In spite of the Puritanical biblical piety, this book expresses a fatherly love for the children of those he is writing to that is hardly rivaled in any book I've read in our time.
I have often heard Proverbs 226 quoted, but I have never heard, to the best of my knowledge such an exposition as this in this short book (essay). There is so much insight given by J.C. Ryle regarding this verse and the immense responsibility parents have as stewards of the gift that children are from God. I have been especially impacted by the question that Ryle states concerning all that is done regarding my responsibility as a father, as one who is to teach my sons how to follow the Lord, "How will this affect their souls?" How will my love for God affect their souls to love God too? How will my discipline toward them affect their souls to understand God's discipline in the things they do in disobedience? How will my example of faith in God affect their souls to place their faith in God as well?

This book has impacted me more than I could ever have imagined and while I know that I am doing my best to be a good father in leading my children, I understand now how much better I need to be, in teaching and training my children in the knowledge of God and to live in a manner that pleases Him too. If it's my aim to know the Lord better on a daily basis and to live for Him in greater obedience, I must teach my children the same. I cannot just allow myself to think they will observe my ways and follow my example without my dutiful diligence of teaching them how.

I have highlighted probably nearly 80% of this book and it will be a book that I will want to read often throughout the year, to keep my heart and mind afresh concerning the instructions given.

The minutes, hours and days I have with them may be many and they must be used wisely and for their profit and those days must be accumulated into years of discipleship training for their lifetime when they go and live as adults in the world.
